Birth Preparation Sessions

Empowering and Educating You for Birth

Our Birth Preparation Sessions have been created with the intent to empower and educate you as you approach labour. We understand that childbirth can be both an exciting and daunting experience, and our goal is to ensure that you feel as prepared and supported as possible.

Understanding Your Body and Baby

A core component of our sessions is to help you gain a deep understanding of the interaction between your baby and your pelvis during labour. We’ll explore how your baby moves through the birth canal and how different active birth positions can create optimal space in your pelvis during each stage of labour. This knowledge allows you to make informed choices and utilise techniques that facilitate a smoother delivery.

Effective Coping Strategies

Managing the intensity of labour—both physically and emotionally—is imperative for a positive birthing experience. We take you through an exercise that aims to help you identify what coping strategies work for you and how these coping strategies can help you handle labour with greater ease, these strategies include:

- Acupressure: Gentle pressure applied to specific points on your body to alleviate discomfort and promote relaxation.

- Visualisation: Visualisation has been proven to be beneficial for many people globally, it can be used during labour to visualise your pelvis opening, your baby descending through the birth canal, or perhaps visualising a calm and happy labour. Visualisation can help reduce anxiety, elicit a sense of control and help you focus your mind. Where the mind goes the energy flows.

- Breathing Techniques: Techniques aimed to maintain calm, manage pain, surrender to the pain and regulate your breathing during contractions.

- Movement and Distraction Techniques: Various methods to distract from discomfort and maintain comfort throughout labour including aromatherapy, light touch, massage, affirmations, hot or cold therapy, counter pressure points and more

Active Birthing

Our sessions emphasise the importance of active birthing positions and the use of supportive tools to enhance your labour experience.

You will learn about:

- Active Birth Positions: We will teach you a range of positions to optimise pelvic positioning during each stage of labour. You may like to use these during labour to help open the pelvic inlet, outlet or mid pelvis allowing optimal space for the baby to pass through.

- Birth Tools: Practical guidance on using tools such as the birth sling, birth ball, and peanut ball to support different stages of labour and alleviate discomfort. The birth sling is a great tool to support your weight during labour allowing you to get into positions such as a deep squat, kneeling or lunging while supporting your weight potentially allowing you to maintain these positions for longer periods. The peanut ball is a great tool for those wanting or who have an epidural as it allows you to remain lying or side-lying and the ball can be placed in between your legs to help create space in the pelvis. It is also great to use during periods of rest. The birth ball can also be used during labour to ease comfort, support you and assist in optimising pelvic positioning.

Support for Your Birth Partner

We understand that your birth partner plays a crucial role in your labour experience. Our sessions include specific education for your partner on techniques to support you, ensuring that both of you are well-prepared and feel empowered throughout the process. We aim to equip your partner with strategies to provide emotional and physical support, enhancing the birth experience.

Additional Techniques and Tools you will learn:

- Perineal Massage: Starting from 35 weeks gestation, this practice helps improve blood flow to the perineal area, helps prepare for the intensities of labour and potentially reduce the risk of tearing.

- Birth Sling and Rebozo: We will teach you how to use these traditional tools effectively during pregnancy and labour. They can help to alleviate any discomfort and support an active, upright labour, which has been associated with better birth outcomes.

- Connecting to Your Pelvic Floor: We will provide you with tools and tips on how to connect with and engage your pelvic floor, breath, and core to enhance your labour experience and support your ability to push down.

- Essential Oils from Seasons of Mama: Essential oils can create a calming environment, provide relief from discomfort and enhance relaxation.

- Birth Comb: This is a practical tool for applying counter-pressure during contractions to help manage pain and provide comfort. It can also be used over acupressure points to provide a distraction from any pain and intensities that may arise.

- Fidget Ring: A simple yet effective tool, this can be used to help distract from the intensities of labour.

- Peanut Ball: Useful for maintaining optimal pelvic positioning and relaxation, especially during labour. Can be a great tool for when lying on your side resting during labour or after an epidural, as the ball can be placed in between your legs helping to optimise pelvic positioning while resting your legs, requiring reduced effort from you.

- Birth Ball: Supports movement and positioning to ease labour pain and promote optimal foetal positioning. It can help encourage the movement of the baby’s head down onto the cervix during pregnancy, can decrease vulva discomfort, improve pelvic alignment and allow for optimal pelvic positioning during labour.

- Rebozo: This traditional Mexican cloth can be used for various supportive techniques during pregnancy and labour to provide comfort and stability. You will be provided with documents on how to use the rebozo and techniques you may choose to use it for. For example, it may be used to help take the weight of the belly or to relax the thigh and back muscles during labour or pregnancy.

- The Birth Sling: Offers versatile support for different labour positions and can help ease discomfort during the birthing process, by taking the weight off you.
